Most brand names have stories. Here’s what some company names mean:
1. IKEA: “IKEA” isn’t a Swedish word. The Swedish company got its name by combining the first letters of the founder, Ingvar Kamprad, the farm where he grew up, Elmtaryd, and his hometown, Agunnaryd.
2. Adidas: Adidas was founded as a European sportswear company in 1924. Adidas is a combination of founder Adolf Dassler’s nickname, Adi, and the first three letters of his last name.
3. MAC: Founded in 1984, “MAC” stands for “Make-up Art Cosmetics.”
4. Skype: The founders first wanted to name it “Sky Peer-to-Peer,” because its technology is transferred “in the sky.” Finally, they decided that was too long and shortened the name to “Skype” in 2003.
5. H&M was founded in 1947 and initially named Hennes. Hennes means “her” in Swedish because the company only sold women’s clothes. Then, the store bought the Mauritz Widforss brand in 1968. It was a hunting and fishing equipment company. The name changed to Hennes and Mauritz. The company then shortened it in 1974 to H&M.
