Swedish Meatballs are from Turkey
Many people think Swedish meatballs are a traditional Swedish dish, but they have roots in Turkey! Sweden’s official Twitter account shared that Swedish meatballs come from a recipe brought to Sweden by King Charles XII in the early 18th century. The king took the recipe from Turkey after spending time there.
But Swedish meatballs aren’t the only dishes with Turkish origins. According to Annie Mattson, a researcher at Sweden’s Uppsala University, King Charles XII also brought coffee beans and a stuffed cabbage recipe from Turkey. These connections show how food traditions can travel across countries and cultures!
